Using Social Networking Tools in Teaching

When: 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. May 1, 2009
Where: Room 4400, Computer and Space Sciences Building 224 Web site: http://www.otal.umd.edu/content/brownbag052009

As more and more students continue to use social networking tools such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter to connect, faculty members are also beginning to consider and explore the use of those social networking sites to facilitate interaction in educational contexts.

How can these social networking sites add value to our teaching? What are their applications in the classroom?

Come join us to discuss the educational uses of social networking sites.
Dr. Brecken Swartz (faculty, Department of Communication) and Dr.
Roberta Lavine (faculty, School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures) will share their experiences with using Facebook, YouTube, and blogs in their teaching and offer their perspectives on educational value and the pros and cons of those social networking sites.

This event is open for all faculty and staff who enjoy participating in lively discussion.

No registration is required.
Light refreshments will be provided.
